China Box Office: ‘Ne Zha 2’ Nears $2 Billion, Sets Imax Records

China’s box office remains dominated by the animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, which continues its record-breaking streak. Over the weekend (Feb. 28–March 2), the film raked in an impressive RMB471.9 million ($65.5 million), bringing its total earnings to a staggering $1.98 billion. With strong audience demand, the Cococartoon release is on track to surpass the $2 billion milestone.

Ne Zha 2 Shatters Imax Records
The phenomenal success of Ne Zha 2 extends to Imax screens, where it has amassed an additional $7.6 million over the weekend. This brings its total Imax earnings to an impressive $144 million, solidifying its position as one of the top four most-watched Imax films globally. Since the start of the Lunar New Year season, Imax titles have collectively generated $160 million, with Ne Zha 2 contributing the bulk of that revenue.

Box Office Rankings: Top Performers
Despite Ne Zha 2’s dominant run, other films continue to make an impact at the Chinese box office:

Detective Chinatown 1900 – This As One Production mystery-comedy added $6.9 million, raising its cumulative earnings to $476.4 million. The franchise continues to attract audiences despite stiff competition.
Boonie Bears: Future Reborn – Fantawild Animation’s latest family-friendly installment earned $1.9 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $108.5 million.
Creation of the Gods 2 – Produced by Beijing Culture, the fantasy epic secured fourth place with $1.5 million, reaching a total of $168.2 million.
Dead Talents Society – Making its debut, this Taiwanese horror-comedy directed by John Hsu grossed $1.4 million in its opening weekend. Starring Chen Bolin as a former pop idol turned ghostly agent and Gingle Wang as his rookie counterpart, the film adds a unique supernatural twist to the lineup.

China’s Box Office Growth in 2025
The total weekend box office reached $83 million, pushing China’s cumulative earnings for 2025 to $3.19 billion—a remarkable 65.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024. As Ne Zha 2 inches closer to the $2 billion mark, all eyes remain on its record-breaking journey.
