International action superstar Donnie Yen is set to direct and star in the latest John Wick spin-off, focusing on his character, Caine. Lionsgate Motion Pictures made the announcement at CinemaCon, confirming that Yen will also serve as an executive producer for the highly anticipated project.
The upcoming film will delve into Caine’s journey after breaking free from the High Table. Production is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong and Macau later this year, adding an authentic backdrop to the story’s intense action sequences.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Yen stated, "The John Wick series sets the highest bar for action filmmaking. I'm deeply grateful to Lionsgate for this opportunity to expand the universe—it’s both thrilling and inspiring."
A legend in action cinema, Yen has garnered critical acclaim for his self-directed thriller The Prosecutor, which boasts a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. He is also globally recognized for his roles in the Ip Man franchise and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
For this John Wick spin-off, Yen will collaborate with Mattson Tomlin, the writer behind The Batman Part II. This pairing signals a high-caliber creative force behind the film, ensuring a unique blend of gripping storytelling and high-octane action.
This project marks a historic achievement, making Yen the first Asian actor to direct and star in a major Hollywood production in such a multifaceted role—surpassing even industry legends like Jackie Chan and Jet Li.
Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson was immediately captivated by the concept of a "Donnie Yen-style" action movie within the John Wick universe. The idea, pitched by franchise director Chad Stahelski alongside Yen, received instant approval.
"Donnie is not only an incredible, charismatic star but also a brilliant filmmaker who knows how to craft action that captivates audiences worldwide," said Fogelson. "We’re thrilled that he’s in the director’s chair to bring Caine’s story to life."
Stahelski echoed the sentiment, describing Caine as one of his favorite characters from the John Wick universe. He emphasized Yen’s expertise in martial arts and filmmaking, stating, "We envision a modern-day kung fu classic that expands the John Wick world. Donnie’s deep understanding of culture, action, and storytelling makes him the perfect director for this project."
Producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee also praised Yen as the ideal choice to helm the spin-off, recognizing his unparalleled ability to blend Hong Kong-style action with Hollywood storytelling.
"There is no one who understands this character better than Donnie," they noted. "He knows exactly how to deliver the high-intensity action that audiences crave. He’s the perfect director for this next chapter of the John Wick saga."
Beyond the spin-off, Lionsgate also confirmed the development of John Wick 5, with Keanu Reeves returning to the lead role and Stahelski directing. Additionally, an animated prequel set before the first film is in production, led by Oscar-nominated animator Shannon Tindle, with Reeves likely to lend his voice to the titular character.
With Yen at the helm, this new spin-off promises to elevate the John Wick franchise with unparalleled martial arts choreography and storytelling mastery. Stay tuned for more updates as production begins in 2025!
